Federal tax uses 2026 brackets and the standard deduction. State tax is not included; Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming have none on wages.

How it is calculated

Taxable income = pay − pre-tax 401(k) − standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married jointly in 2026). Federal tax applies the 2026 brackets to it. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500; Medicare is 1.45% of all wages plus 0.9% above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married jointly).

Not included: state and local tax, tax credits such as the child tax credit, health insurance premiums and the new deductions for tips and overtime. Your real paycheck also depends on your W-4.
